A one day talk on Northeastern Borderlands: Issues and Challenges

13th Feb, 2026, 06:23 pm A one day talk on Northeastern Borderlands: Issues and Challenges

Date: 13.02.2026

A one day talk on “Northeastern Borderlands: Issues and Challenges” was organized by the Department of Anthropology, Dera Natung Government College, Itanagar in collaboration with Forum for Awareness of National Security, Itanagar Chapter in DNGCI conference hall.
At the outset, Dr. Ratna Tayeng, Head, Department of Anthropology, DNGCI and Executive Secretary of FANS, Itanagar, warmly welcomed the gathering. In his welcoming address, he highlighted the main objective of organising the one-day talk, which was to create awareness and encourage meaningful discussion on borders and borderlands issues. He emphasised that awareness is the first line of defense, and when citizens are informed, the nation is empowered.
Dr. M. Q. Khan, Principal of DNGCI and Patron of FANS, Itanagar, spoke about the strategic importance of Arunachal Pradesh in the national context. He mentioned that being a border state, Arunachal Pradesh holds a very significant position in terms of national security. Therefore, he stressed the need to sensitise citizens, especially the youth, about the importance of safeguarding borderland areas and understanding related challenges with maturity and responsibility.
The special talk was delivered by Dr. A.P. Rout, Former Director General of Police and former Chief RTI Commissioner of Assam. In his insightful address, he spoke about the importance of balancing tribal culture with nationalism. He highlighted the need to strengthen both internal and external security measures to effectively deal with borderland issues. He also informed the gathering about the development of national highways, economic corridors, and military airbases in Arunachal Pradesh, stating that such infrastructure projects are undertaken keeping national security in mind.
Speaking in a social context, Dr. Rout advised students to move forward with modernity in a responsible manner. He cautioned them against falling into problems such as drug abuse and urged them to remain alert about misinformation and cyber security threats in today’s social media-driven world. He encouraged the youth to stay aware, disciplined, and rooted in their cultural values.
Er. V. N. Pandey, former Superintending Engineer-cum-Director of the Water Resource Department, Government of Arunachal Pradesh, and National Executive Member of FANS, New Delhi, addressed the gathering on the importance of national security as a top priority for the country. He explained that FANS, Itanagar Chapter, works in various areas related to national security awareness and preservation of cultural identity. He also stressed that the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system should be strengthened with the active support of civil society organisations to protect the tribal culture and identity of the state.
An engaging interactive session followed the talks, where students raised thoughtful questions to the speakers. The discussion covered important topics such as inter-marriage and domicile issues, the perceived divide between mainland and peripheral India, border demarcation, and concerns related to racial discrimination. The speakers responded patiently and encouraged students to think critically and responsibly about these sensitive issues.
The programme concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks delivered by Dr. A. K. Pandey, Head, Department of Commerce, DNGCI and Vice-President, FANS, Itanagar Chapter. The event witnessed the enthusiastic participation of 110 participants from the college.
